Jon Jones Won’t Undergo Surgery, Plans to Fight Again in 2011

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones won’t undergo a planned surgery for a hand injury that forced him out of an August fight with former teammate-turned-rival Rashad Evans and plans on returning to the Octagon by the end of the year.

Jones was scheduled to undergo surgery this week to repair a torn ligament in his thumb, but opted out of the procedure after the surgeon advised him it was too invasive, according to his agent, Malki Kawa.

“Bones” is still recovering from the injury, but has already met with the UFC to begin plans for his first title defense, which is expected to come before the end of the year, but not against Evans, who is now scheduled to face fellow contender Phil Davis at UFC 133.

Jones (13-1) won the title with a third-round TKO of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in March, just six weeks after earning a shot at the belt with a February win over Ryan Bader.

Next to the Evans-Davis winner, the next contender at 205-pounds is likely former champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, who faces Matt Hamill later this month in the main event of UFC 130.

The news follows a reported altercation between Jones and Evans while in Las Vegas this week for the UFC Fighter Summit that was allegedly broken up by welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

rashad does not deserve the title shot, his last fight was against rampage he was supposed to get a title shot against rua, both of them got injured, jones beats rua, jones is now the champ and evans is bumped from number 2 to 3, he needs to prove that he can win, ring rust is real he has not fought in over a yr and half i think

To be honest, rashad is the only guy right now capable of beating him, due to the fact that they've trained together. If rashad or machida cant beat him, then he's very capable of going on a nice streak, but not right now.

Do u know how many different lhw champs there have been in the last 5 years. This is the toughest division in the game. All those other champs were put on pedestals and knocked right off. Why disrespect the rest of the division? Bones is a beast dont get me wrong, but he's only been in the game 2 or 3 years. The top 5 behind bones needs to be respected.

training is different from fighting, tito out wrestled chuck all day when they were friends what happened there, i do respect rashad but its ignorant and not smart to fight a champion when ur last fight was over a year and half ago, dana was right every single time he said it, if champ is injured and ur supposed to be the second best guy in lhw go out and prove and wait till the champ is healthy, no he has to wait then he gets injured, injury would have still happened, but he would have 2 fights under his belt b4 the title and then he could have waited for jones who is only gonna be out for a month he is cleared to fight after the 11th, so 3 months after that he and shad could have fought both only missing around 4 months of action instead he gets a guy who is in a lower half of top ten if he loses he loses a lot of luster in the rankings while davis star shines even better, u cant really tell if he has the tools to win against jones because no one has shown is weakness, in the shields gsp fight everyone said and i said it to, when shields gets gsp down its a different fight, shields didnt get one takedown at all, and its prbly gonna be the same, bader is a better wrestler than shad on paper, shad is faster and more explosive but technique wise i would give the edge to bader, but back to the point if he cant get the fight to the ground which there is a high probability that he might not get a takedown what is he gonna do, he is not gonna outstrike jones, rua couldnt do anything to him, and jones has the best team in the world he is training in every aspect and only getting better, shad is very good but its tough, jones is a great wrestler and he stuffed every single td with ease and made bader pull guard

I wish they were still fighting, I swear. Rashad will KO Phil even after a long layoff. Then he'll be ready for whoever's next.
