A pair of fighters who share an extended connection through June's UFC on Versus 4 event will now face-off in October, as Charlie Brenneman (14-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) faces Anthony "Rumble" Johnson (9-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC).
UFC officials today announced the new matchup after Brenneman hinted at the bout on his official Twitter account.
"I feel a 'Rumble' coming on," Brenneman stated.
What remains a mystery at this point is where the fight will take place.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the promotion that the two could be heading to an as-yet-unannounced October event, likely to air on Spike TV. However, UFC 136 and UFC 137 remain possibilities, as well.
Brenneman, of course, took advantage of Nate Marquardt's recent misfortune by stepping in on just one-day's notice in the co-feature of June's UFC on Versus 4 event. Brenneman outwrestled Rick Story, who was a replacement for an injured Johnson, en route to a unanimous-decision win.
Brenneman is 9-1 in his past 10 fights, including a 3-1 mark in the octagon. The lone loss in that stretch was a UFC 117 defeat at the hands of Johny Hendricks.
Meanwhile, Johnson returns to action after a March decision win over Dan Hardy. The UFC Fight Night 24 victory was Johnson's first action in 16 months after knee troubles forced him to the sidelines for more than a year.
Despite the periods of inactivity, the massive Johnson is 4-1 in his past five UFC fights.
