Middleweight contenders Chael Sonnen and Mark Munoz will meet in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 2 to determine who will get the shot at champion Anderson Silva, the UFC officially announced on Saturday before The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale.
Sonnen (26-11-1) nearly dethroned Silva in August 2010, but was submitted in the final round and was then sidelined for more than a year after a failed drug test. Sonnen returned to the Octagon in October with a second-round submission of Brian Stann that earned him a rematch, but he’ll face Munoz first with Silva out until June.
Munoz (12-2) has won four-straight since a narrow loss to Yushin Okami last August, including a unanimous decision over former title challenger Demian Maia in June and second-round TKO of Chris Leben at UFC 138 last month.
UFC on FOX 2 takes place on January 28 in Chicago and is headlined by a showdown between light heavyweight contenders Rashad Evans and Phil Davis.
