A rubber match between Forrest Griffin and Tito Ortiz is in the works, but it is not yet clear which upcoming UFC event could host the matchup between the former UFC light heavyweight champions.
UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta confirmed the fight on Twitter overnight after a recent campaign by Ortiz to fight Griffin for the third time in what he says will be his final fight that he hopes will take place on July 4 weekend.
Ortiz edged Griffin by split decision in their first meeting at UFC 59 in 2006, then Griffin evened the series with his own split decision over Ortiz at UFC 106 in 2009.
The UFC’s July 4 weekend event is UFC 148 on July 7 in Las Vegas, while other possible events include UFC on Fox 3 on May 5 and UFC 146 on May 26.
June’s UFC 147 event in Brazil already has its main and co-main events, as Anderson Silva rematches Chael Sonnen and The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil coaches Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort meet for the second time. Fertitta, who is currently in Brazil for filming of the country’s first edition of TUF, confirmed that TUF: Brazil will air on UFC.com in the U.S. when it debuts next month.
