After successfully avenging his only career loss against Urijah Faber earlier this month at UFC 132, UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz is set to take on number one contender Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson at UFC on Versus 6 on October 1st in Washington D.C. Cruz defeated Brian Bowles at WEC 47 on Versus last March to win the bantamweight title.
UFC on Versus 6 will be the first free televised event to feature a Zuffa title fight since WEC 53 in December and the first since UFC 75 in 2007 on Spike TV to host a UFC championship fight.
Cruz (18-1) earned a unanimous decision over Faber on July 2 to avenge a first-round submission loss in their first meeting for the WEC featherweight title in 2007. Since that loss, Cruz has notched nine victories in a row, including the aforementioned Bowles, Scott Jorgenson, and two against Joseph Benavidez.
A possible rubber match between Cruz and Faber was discussed, but UFC officials decided to give Johnson the opportunity, while Faber will face Bowles at UFC 139 in November.
UFC on Versus 6 will take place at The Verizon Center in Washington D.C. on October 1st. The card will also feature Charlie Brenneman vs. Anthony Johnson, a rematch of Mac Danzig and Matt Wiman, and Michael Johnson taking on Paul Sass.
