While the Japanese mixed martial arts scene has been struggling to remain competitive with it’s U.S. counterparts the past several years, the downhill stumble it has taken since the death of Pride Fighting Championships appears to be far from over.
A recent report states that the Fighting and Entertainment Group (FEG), the promoter’s of both Dream and K-1 events, is unlikely to stage any futher events until at least the summertime.
MMAFighting reports that FEG, the promoters of both Dream mixed martial arts events and K-1 kickboxing events, does not expect to hold any more events “until at least July”.
According to the report, the company is currently undergoing “internal restructuring” which “will not be completed until at least May”.
The financial uncertainty surrounding FEG has caused many to speculate as to what the future holds for both Dream and K-1.
Both Dream interim heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem and lightweight competitor Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante have recently made claims that they are still owed money for recent FEG bouts.
Meanwhile, fellow Japanese promotion Sengoku Raiden Championship has been experiencing its own bout of uncertainty.
Over the past few weeks, former Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago, along with Dave “Pee Wee” Herman and Ronnie Mann, have all left the Japanese promotion. Santiago and Herman both signed with the UFC while Mann was picked up by Bellator just a few days ago.
This all follows the departure of Dream’s most recognizable star Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto along with featherweight Michihiro Omigawa from the promotion to the UFC. Those two competed at UFC 126 earlier this month.
FEG’s last event, Dynamite!! 2010, occurred on New Year’s Eve and featured a number of Dream & K-1 bouts including Overeem defeating former UFC fighter Todd Duffee for the interim heavyweight title.
