Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante (15-4-1 2 NC) is wasting no time in returning to the Strikeforce cage as he is set to face Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm (16-2) at Strikeforce/M-1 Global: Fedor vs Henderson on July 30. Strikeforce announced the bout via Twitter.
The fight comes a month after an accidental eye poke caused Cavalcante’s fight with Justin Wilcox to end in a no contest at Strikeforce: Overeem vs Werdum.
Cavalcante, a K-1 Hero’s and Dream veteran, holds wins over respected veterans Caol Uno, Rani Yahya, and Vitor Ribeiro. “JZ” has hit a rough patch in his career as he holds one win in his last six fights. In that six fight span, Cavalcante suffered two no contests and dropped bouts to Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, and Josh Thomson.
Beerbohm opened his career with sixteen straight wins before falling to Aoki and Pat Healy in his last two outings. The resilient Beerbohm, who struggled with drug addiction before embarking on an MMA career, counts UFC veterans Rafaello Oliveira and Duane Ludwig as two of his biggest wins.
The card is headlined by a heavyweight bout between Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion Dan Henderson and former Pride Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko. Rumored bouts between Tim Kennedy and Robbie Lawler, as well as Tyron Woodley and Paul Daley, have yet to be officially announced.
